Halloween Neighborhood Fun  Tiffany Goeke

Last year there was a knock at my door during the month of October.  I opened the door to find a brown sandwich bag with a note and ghost attached to it.  Inside the bag was some candy.  We did as the note said, we taped the ghost to our front door, photocopied the note twice, made two more ghosts, places some candy in two bags and continued to pass it around to two neighbors.  It was really fun to see how many houses within a weeks time had these funny ghosts taped to their front door!  We lived on a military base and even the base commander had one on his door!  I hope you all try this and see how many doors in your neighborhood will have ghosts on them:-)  The ghost was very simply made with white paper and was about 10 inches long and 6 inches wide, with two circles drawn for eyes and a smile on his face:-)  Enjoy!!

The note attached:

Good Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeevening!!!!

The Phantom Ghost has come to town,
To leave some goodies I see you've found.
If you do not wish a CURSE to fall,
Continue this greeting............this Phantom call!!

Post this phantom in a place where it can be seen,
And leave it there till Halloween.
This will scare other Phantoms that may come,
Be sure to join, don't be a bum!!

Then make two treats, two ghosts, and two notes like this,
And deliver them to two neighbors who may have been missed.
You must be quick, you only have one day,
Go to a house with no GHOST on display.
Deliver at dark, when there's not any light,
Ring the doorbell, run quickly and stay out of sight!!

Last but not least, come join in the season,
Be happy, be silly, you need not a reason.
One last thought, remember don't be seen!!
And share in the spirit of spooky Halloween!!

Here is a variation of the Ghost or Snowman Soup:

In a cellophane bag or baggie, add:
1 package of hot cocoa mix
A couple sprinkles of the decorator florets (in the shaker for the buttons)
A peppermint stick/peppermint candy drop or red hots if you prefer
Maybe some chocolate chips (for the eyes)
And maybe just for fun some gum drops

Tie up the bag with some "rick-rack" that you find at the craft stores (looks like icing)

FRIDAY THE 13TH SHOW #2  by Joanne in Jersey

1 hour till show time today and here I am putting my ideas on paper.  I used the web site that someone posted the other day...thanks a bunch! http://www.corsinet.com/trivia/scary.html     Couldn't have done it without you.  Hope this helps someone in the future!

Give the word, example, APPLE, and ask if anyone knows of a superstition that goes with it.  Give a point to the person that guesses it correctly. An apple a day, keeps the Dr. away. Counting the # of seeds inside a cut apple will
tell you how many children you will have someday. Show and discuss the fruit basket.

Baby: suspend a wedding band held by a piece of thread over the palm of a pregnant girl.  If the ring swings in an oval it's a girl. If it swings in a straight line, it's a boy.

Show and discuss the kiddie purse.

Bee:  If a bee enters your home, it's a sign that you will soon have a visitor.  If you kill the bee you will have bad luck or the visitor will be unpleasant.
Show your BEE basket and discuss Dresden/bus trips.  I show my small vegetable that I wove during the BEE to promote the bus trip idea.

Birthday Cake:  Blow out all the candles on your first puff and get your wish
Show and discuss uses for the cake basket.

Blue: Touch blue and your wish will come true
Show and discuss Fabrics, starting with the blue ones

Bread:  A loaf of bread should never be turned upside down after a slice has been cut from it.  (Bad luck?)
Show and discuss bread baskets and baker's rack

Coin:  It's bad luck to pick up a coin if it's tails side up.  Good luck comes if it's heads up
Show and discuss new leather accessories, new purse or catch all basket

Dog:  A dog howling at night when someone is sick is a bad omen
Show and discuss new dog items

Door:  It's bad luck to leave a house through a different door than the one used to come into it
Show and discuss the mail basket that could be hung by a door

Flag:  Bad luck if the flag touches the ground
Show and discuss inaugural basket

Mirror:  Break a mirror and get 7 years bad luck.  It's unlucky to see your face in a mirror by candlelight.  A mirror should be covered during a thunderstorm because it attracts lightning.
Show and discuss the vanity basket

Mistletoe:  Mistletoe in the house protects it from thunder and lightning.  Standing under the mistletoe, you can't refuse a kiss
Show and discuss the Christmas line

Pencil:  If you use the same pencil to take a test that you used for studying for the test, the pencil will remember the answers.
Show and discuss pen pal/note pal baskets

Rosemary:  Planted by your doorstep it will keep witches away.

Show and discuss booking a show.  Talk about booking baskets saying:  We don't have a Rosemary basket, but how about parsley, thyme or chives?  Book a show and help _____(hostess) get one!

Sneeze:  One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a letter, Four for a boy.  Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret, never to be told.  Itchy nose....someone is coming...left nostril will be a male, right will be
female
Show and discuss:  Tissue baskets

Valentine's Day:  If a woman sees a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it means she will marry a sailor.  If she sees a sparrow, she will marry a poor man and be very happy.  If she sees a goldfinch, she will marry a millionaire.
Show and discuss Sweetheart promo

Wish:  If you make a wish while throwing a coin into a fountain, it will come true.   Wish I may, wish I might, get the wish I wish tonight. If you tell someone your wish, it won't come true.
Show and discuss the {Catalog}

Yawn:  A yawn is a sign that danger is near.

Also means it's time for me to end my show...thanks for coming!

Of course, people may have other superstitious sayings and ideas other than those listed here.

Lollipop Spiders  (Great little give away at your shows!)

For each spider, you'll need:

1 Tootsie Pop
4 black pipe cleaners (chenille stems)

Hold the 4 pipe cleaners together and bend in half.
Place the tootsie pop stick through the bend, up to the candy part of the pop.
Twist the pipe cleaners once around each other, tightly holding the pop.
You'll now have a spider head (the pop) and 8 legs (4 on each side of the stick).
About 2" from the stick, sharply bend one leg down, then bend again about 1" from the first bend and perpendicular to the first bend (kind of like making a foot. Repeat for all 8 legs.
Adjust the legs so it will support the pop.

There's your spider!

Other ideas for the spider:
You could cover the pop with orange tissue paper and use markers to make eyes, etc.
Cover the pop with old fabric scraps in Halloween patterns.

This is so easy to do...just hard to describe in words!

SPOOKY HANDS  by Kathy R.

Materials:
1.  Clear Plastic Gloves (the kind they use in food service -- you can usually find them at the dollar store (or even in your school's cafeteria!))
2.  Candy Corn  (5 pieces for each student)
3.  Popped Popcorn
4.  Plastic "spider" rings (you can find these in the Halloween dept of Walmart, KMart, etc in bags of 30 or so...)
5.  Twist ties or ribbon

Directions:
1.  Divide the supplies as follows :  5 candy corn, 1 spider ring, 1 twist tie or ribbon per student.  (You can pre-package the glove, ribbon or twist tie, spider ring and candy corn in little "treat bags" -- the paper kind they sell 40 for under a dollar.)  Popcorn in Ziploc sandwich bags (one for each student)
2. Assembly as follows:
Place 1 candy corn in each finger of glove, with "pointed" end in finger tip (these are the fingernails)
Fill the fingers and hand of the glove with popcorn.  Tie at wrist with ribbon or twist tie.
Put ring on finger. (if rings aren't open in back, you may have to snip with scissors to make it easier to get on the finger)

Guests sit in a circle on floor; lights are out except for the flashlight Narrator reads by.  Lay each item to be passed in a separate bowl.  Guests will pick up the item, put it back in bowl, then pass to the next person.  While guests pass an item, Narrator holds the flashlight underneath his chin to give his face a scary look.

POOR JOE, HE SHOULD HAVE STAYED HOME ON THAT HALLOWEEN NIGHT.  BUT OUT HE WENT TO THE DARK, DARK NIGHT.  A GOBLIN WAS WATCHING JOE WALK 'CROSS THE LAND.  HE SWOOPED DOWN BESIDE HIM, AND SNATCHED OFF HIS HAND!!  POOR JOE.

(Narrator passes cold stuffed, rubber glove to person next to him.  It continues being passed around until it returns to Narrator who sets it down and then continues with story.)

HE SHIVERED AND SHOOK AND GREW Oh SO COLD.  HE FELL WHEN HE RAN, CAUSE HE LOST ALL HIS TOES!  POOR JOE.

(Narrator passes 10 small pieces of peeled carrots of different sizes.)

A BLACK CAT CROSSED HIS PATH GIVING JOE SUCH A SCARE.  HE THREW BACK HIS HEAD AND OFF CAME HIS HAIR!  POOR JOE.

(Narrator passes a wig.)

HOBBLING ALONG, ONE HAND ON A CANE, JOE TRIED HARD TO THINK BUT --- OOPS! --- NO MORE BRAIN!  POOR JOE.

(Narrator passes cold, cooked spaghetti.)

"OH NO, I CAN'T THINK, BUT AT LEAST I CAN HEAR.  IF WITCHES OR GOBLINS SHOULD NOW REAPPEAR."  SO JOE KEPT ON GOING--LADEN WITH FEAR, BUT HE SHOOK AS HE WALKED, AND OFF FELL HIS EAR!  POOR JOE.

(Narrator passes dried apricot.)

AND THERE IN THE DISTANCE HIS HOUSE HE COULD SPY, BUT JUST FOR A SECOND...FOR OUT POPPED HIS EYES!  POOR JOE.

(Narrator passes two peeled, green grapes.)

HE YELLED AND HE SCREAMED, AND HE SCREAMED AND HE YELLED.  HOPING THAT SOMEONE WOULD BE THERE TO TELL.  SO HE TOOK A DEEP BREATH.  HIS PATIENCE WAS WRUNG, BUT NO SOUND WAS UTTERED FOR OUT FELL HIS TONGUE!  POOR JOE.

(Narrator passes a piece of liver.)

AH WHAT A SHAME!  WHAT A PITY!  WHAT A FRIGHT!  THAT JOE VENTURED OUT ON THAT HALLOWEEN NIGHT.  HE LAY THERE ALONE...NOTHING LEFT, NOT A PART.  AND ALL YOU COULD HEAR WAS THE BEAT OF HIS HEART.  THUMP, THUMP, THUMP.

(Narrator turns off flashlight and slowly and softly repeats the word "THUMP" several times.
